Missouri Monster Now Termed ‘Hairy Biped’
Louisiana, Mo. (UPI) – The Missouri Monster smells terrible. The “International Unidentified Flying Object Bureau” thinks it may have a head shaped like a pumpkin and glowing orange eyes. If so, it’s a Giant Hairy Biped (GHB) from outer space. On the other hand, it might be a troglodyte. But perhaps only Mark Twain, who used to live 20 miles up the Mississippi from this small Missouri town, could really do it justice. The monster, whatever it is, has been scaring people for the last 10 days. About 50 persons say they have seen it. The UFO “bureau’s” director, Hayden C. Howes, believe it may be a Giant Hairy Biped, one of the four categories the bureau has for creatures from outer space. But there is a chance, Hewes said in Oklahoma City Friday, it is a troglodyte – an ancient cave-dwelling creature. Louisiana is downriver from Hannibal, Mo., Twain’s boyhood home, and the area is dotted with caves. Hewes said he and a team of researchers would come to Louisiana Saturday to investigate. He said descriptions of the monster, which residents have named “Momo,” are similar to that of hairy beasts he said have been sighted in the Florida Everglades and near Binder, Wash., in 1971. “Momo” is described as being six to 12 feet tall, covered with hair, walking erect, and emitting a foul sulphuric odor. The beast has a large pumpkin-shaped head, glowing orange eyes, an ape-like growth of hair, large feet, clawed hands and arms that reach to the knee.
Hewes UFO bureau describes hairy bipeds as ranging in height from about two feet to seven feet. They react violently if disturbed by humans and probably have the intelligence of a chimpanzee, he said. Hewes said more than 300 GHP’s have been seen in recent years. Some people think they are experimental animals sent to earth by their masters on another planet to carry out robot-type duties. The Missouri Monster was first seen July 12 by Doris Harrison, 15, in a wooded area near her rural home. Since then others have reported the creature crossing a highway with a dog in its mouth, lifting up the back end of a small foreign car, and growling at two young boys.

Sunday Dominion – Post
Morgantown, West Virginia, July 23, 1972
UFO researcher will camp out to find smelly, hairy monster
Louisiana, Mo. (UPI) – A researcher of unidentified flying objects said Saturday he will camp in the woods where edgy citizens have reported seeing a huge, foul-smelling, hairy monster.
Hayden C. Hewes founder and director of the private International Unidentified Flying Object Bureau spent Saturday interviewing residents of this Mississippi River community who say they have seen the six to 12-foot tall creature. He and assistants sought to determine if the monster – dubbed Momo for Missouri monster – might be an alien creature from outer space. Hewes sought one resident who reported seeing the creature early Saturday. He said he would take scientific equipment and camp in the woods Saturday night in efforts to record growls of Momo. “I am convinced something has been observed,” Hewes said. “Just what it is I don’t know at this time.”
He said he came here to determine if descriptions might place Momo into a class of “giant hairy bipeds” a classification of extra-terrestrial creatures from the UFO bureau’s files of about 300 reported sightings over the past few years. Hewes said giant hairy bipeds (GHB) were seen in the Florida Everglades and near Vader, Wash., in 1971. The GHB is described as having a large pumpkin-shaped head, glowing orange eyes, and ape-like growth of hair, large feet, clawed hands and arms that reach to the knee.
Researchers believe GHB’s may be experimental animals sent to earth from another planets. Hewes said. Hewes talked with Edgar Harrison, whose daughter Doris, 15, claims she first saw the monster 10 days ago. He has taken plaster cases of footprints found near his rural home. The casts are of “average to poor quality because the soil was real dry,” Hewes said. He said the prints appear to have “four or five toes coming out from a palm-like base” and were nine inches by seven inches.
About 50 residents of this city of 4,400 claim to have seen the monster. It was reported to have been seen growling at some boys, lifting a small foreign car and crossing a highway with a dog in its mouth.
