Mystery Hangs on but Beast’s Gone
Chicago, Sept 10 – Just as people around Sterling were pondering a plan to hunt their mysterious, predatory beast with kettles and dishpans, the beast “took it on the lam.” “It looks like it has gone south,” explained William Mundt yesterday. Mundt, post office custodian at Starling, sponsored the kettle-and-dishpan idea.
Just how far south remained a matter of considerable conjecture, for, from out of Atlanta, Ga., there came the story of how several excited residents had telephoned police to report a lion at large. Since the Sterling marauder has been variously reported as a lion, tiger, lynx and bobcat, quite a few people were wondering whether Atlanta’s prowler can be the same one.
To the south, also Arthur Monson of New Bedford reported he had found his dog, clawed and dying. Another victim was thus charged against the mystery creature, which is blamed for numerous deaths of pigs, sheep, poultry and even a 4-month old colt.
