Sasquatch Visited Hanover?
A former New Oxford woman is among those who have spotted “Bigfoot” in York county according to York news reports. Helene Weaver, former operator of the New Oxford News Agency, and a former PennDOT employer now a resident of York claims to have seen the legendary Sasquatch in a wooded area south of Hanover back in 1957. Mrs. Weaver said she had parked her car in a wooded area one evening and Bigfoot approached with out-stretched hands. According to an article the York Dispatch: “He just stood still,” she said. Mrs. Weaver described the Sasquatch as being very very tall, with wide eyes and long brown hair covering his face and body. “He must have been quite old,” she observed. “I took off. I didn’t hang around.”
Mrs. Weaver said she believes the Sasquatch must have lived in a nearby cave because she and several other Hanover residents spotted it on other occasion. “This has been going on for years in the Hanover area,” she reported. The York woman said she knows other have had similar encounters because of “complaint letters” received by PennDOT. The Dispatch also has heard from Sasquatch enthusiasts wanting to form expeditions in the sighting area.
Robert Chance, Bel Air High School ecology teacher and Bigfoot expert emphatically discourages such undertakings. Besides the danger from winter elements and rugged terrain he said, there’s also the chance of encounters with bears and cougars. Besides he added, chances are exceedingly slim that an amateur could track down the clever Sasquatch. Chance worries about gun-wielding expeditionaries because they are contrary to the goal of treating Bigfoot as and endangered species. There’s also the threat he said of harassing the residents and destroying property.
