Has Bigfoot Again Made Area Visit?
Four years ago, in September 1966 a man on a motorcycle riding on the Mill Creek Road, sat astride his cycle to more closely examine some huge footprints he’d spotted in the dust of the gravel road. That man was Pete Luther, Walla Walla construction worker, and his findings drew Roger Patterson, top tracker of “Bigfoot” or Sasquatch, as the Indians of Canada call the woods monster. Now it appears a possibility that Bigfoot has come again to the Blue Mountains of Mill Creek, for another Walla Wallan, Rich Myers, Scenic Loop Road, reports a sighting of which bears some evidence of being one of the hairy apes.
The Mill Creek road south of the state line can be a quiet ride night or day and a fine route for a few moments of quiet contemplation, be it in a car or astride a cycle. The latter mode was the choice of Myers, who is a senior at Wa-Hi this year. He was taking an early evening ride up Mill Creek Aug. 15 after a day in the harvest fields. Myers had been up the creek a few miles, turned around and as darkness was settling in, was a short way above Camp Kiwanis as he slowly tooled his bike along the rocky road, his headlight burning to light up the rough route ahead. He still doesn’t know why he turned his head to the left, unless it was the movement seen above the dark outline of low brush at that point.
“There…at a low point in the brush,” Myers recalled, “was a huge, shadow-like form which at first, I thought might be a couple of guys from Camp Kiwanis playing a prank, one on the shoulders of the other. It was 10-12 feet tall. Then it made a weird screaming sound, high-pitched, with its arms outstretched…. I immediately put the motorcycle into high gear and shot out of there and down the road…”
I picked up young Myers six days later, when he was finished with wheat harvest and we went back to locate the scene of this sighting. Of serous mien. Myers reminded that when we went up to look over the site and to pinpoint where he’d not only possibly seen a Bigfoot but had heard one. He had been a truck driver during the harvest just completed the day before.
To Dark to Tell
Myers couldn’t recall if the creature he’d seed had been covered with hair or not; it was too dark. About the sound, though, he is more certain. It was of a higher pitch than the scream of a cougar (he’d heard cougars scream before) and this was an interesting point for his description of the sound jibes with others who have heard Bigfoot’s call. Also, worth noting was Myers’ declaration that the palms of the thing’s hands seemed lighter in color than the rest of it.
Our search for footprints was not rewarded. In the brush where Myers said he’d seed the creature; the dry grass was well beaten down and cows had grazed here and there were ample rocky areas wherever dirt appeared. The roadway revealed no prints and here too it was quite rocky. Better trackers than Myers and the rover might have found something, but we failed. Of what he saw…and what he heard…Myers is uncertain. He definitely heard and saw “something” though, and he is also certain what he saw and heard was not man or beast of the well-known variety!
