New Sasquatch Hunt Launched
Colville, Wash. (AP) – An estimated 50 men were combing the rugged country of northeastern Washington Saturday for signs of a shaggy, cream-colored, man-like beast known as a sasquatch or “bigfoot”
The latest of a number of searches for the legendary sasquatch was touched off Tuesday when prospector Joe Metlow of Valley, Wash., reported he had seen one of the creatures feeding near his mining claim in northern Steven County, near the Washington-British Columbia border. Metlow said the beast was about nine feet tall and weighed an estimated 1,000 pounds. The prospector claims the hairy beast, standing erect like an ape, was scraping snow away from ferns with its front “hands” and eating the plant roots.
The report was picked up by a large number of dedicated sasquatch, or “bigfoot” hunters in this northwestern Washington community and relayed to others who have pursued sighting of giant tracks, supposedly belonging to the animal, for years.
Two professional sasquatch hunting groups were spearheading the latest search. One group is the Northwest Research Assn., headed by Roger Patterson of Yakima, Wash., and a Canadian group headed by Rene Dahinden of British Columbia. Another of the searchers is an unidentified Washington State Game Dept. inspector.
The search was not started until late in the week because Metlow refused to divulge exactly where he saw the live sasquatch until someone pays him what he considers a proper price for the information. One report is that he has rejected a $55,000 offer. But on Friday, groups of hunters left Colville by plane, helicopter, in various vehicles and on snowshoes in an attempt to find the beast on their own.
