Report # 3401 (Class A)
Submitted by witness on Monday, November 19, 2001. Motorist and passenger catch glimpse of humanlike figure crossing the road
YEAR: 2001

SEASON: Fall

MONTH: November

DATE: 11/18/2001

STATE: Pennsylvania

COUNTY: Mercer County

LOCATION DETAILS: Lamor connects Rte 18(Hermitage) and Rte 19(Mercer) in Mercer County.

NEAREST TOWN: Hermitage

NEAREST ROAD: Lamor

OBSERVED: I was returning home from a NFL football game that I had attended out of state. It was about 8:45pm. The road I was traveling on had a lot bends with patches of woods on both sides, broken up by houses every so often. It is a back road that connects two towns. The posted speed limit ranges from 10mph to 45mph. I was traveling at about 55-60mph on the straighter sections(I was trying to get home, I had been driving for a couple of hours). This is where it happened. One of my good friends was sitting in the front with me. We had the radio up loud and was singing and staring straight ahead. Two more of my friends where in the back seat talking. As I came around a bend into a straight-a-way, with woods on both sides, something caught my vision just in the edge of the headlights(high beams). I saw the mid and lower torso, and legs of what appeared to be a person. It appeared to be crossing the road. I saw it take a right and then left stride and then it went into the trees on the right side of the road. I vaguely saw the color, it was a light brown. When I first saw the movement I thought it was a person going into the woods, this is the movement it had, however it glided with great speed. It happened so quickly, I thought that I had imagined it until I looked at my friend sitting next to me, he was staring back at me, this made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. I asked him if he "seen that" and he yelled "yeah". I had slowed down to about 40mph with the intent to stop(not really knowing what to do) when the two in the back seat yelled "whats going on?" I said, me and (name of friend) saw something, and the two in the back told me to keep going, they did not want to stop. I now wish I had. stopped.

OTHER WITNESSES: There were 2 witnesses including myself. I was driving and the other witness was looking out the windshield.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: About 8:45pm. It was a cool, clear, and dark night.

ENVIRONMENT: Flat, wooded area heavily populated with wildlife(turkey, rabbits, deer), few houses and farms.

Report # 3647 (Class A)
Submitted by witness on Tuesday, January 15, 2002. Sightings by a hunter west of Greenville, in the woods near Hell's Hollow Rd. and Rt. 358
YEAR: 86/88

SEASON: Fall

STATE: Pennsylvania

COUNTY: Mercer County

LOCATION DETAILS: Site is located west of Greenville 5 miles on rt 358 and left on Hell's Hollow road.

NEAREST TOWN: Orangeville

NEAREST ROAD: Hell's Hollow and rt358

OBSERVED: I have had two occasions to observe an unkown creature in the wood's of western pennsylvania. The first was in the fall of 1986 as a teenager I was parking in a desolate location called Hell's Hollow about 1/2mile away from a boy scout camp. I was only pulled off the road enough not to block traffic because I did not want to get stuck in the muddy lane. While we were sitting there talking a figure of large proportion walked past the front of the truck. I would guess about 7 to 8 ft tall and about 300 to 400lbs. All I saw was a large dark-brown biped about three feet in front of the truck. It ignored us totally and was gone into the thick brush. It was dark and no further observation was made. I hit the key and split, the girl I was with evidently did not see this because she was clueless as to why I made such a hasty retreat. The second sighting occurred in the fall of 1988 in the early fall while hunting in the same area. Actually we parked in the same place. We crossed the small creek at the bottom of the hollow and proceded west up the next hillside which is very steep. We separated to better our chances of seeing squirrels. I walked about 1/4 miles north along the ridge and sat down. After sitting there for about two hours I had seen nothing. I went back down the hill to find my friend. As I hit the bottom of the hill and started across the creek I could see my friend looking my way. As I got to him he just kept looking past me. I thought he had seen something to shoot at and turned. All we saw was a dark brown or black long haired creature running up the steepest part of the hill. It took me about 3 to 7 minutes to cover that hill on less sloping ground walking down hill. This thing ran up it in about 15 to 20 seconds. (I know I would have to climb the slope and maybe need a rope to just get up it.) It ran sort of apelike on all fours pulling its way up with the front paws. The guy I was hunting with doesn't believe in bigfoot and says it must have been a bear. Bear are around this area but are very rare. And bears don't run in such a manner as this did.

ALSO NOTICED: The location is known as Hell's Hollow is unusually cold compared to the rest of the area because of the lack of sunlight reaching the bottom. The area in question has changed rapidly due to logging and settlement. It is also on the edge of the ohio flatlands. There are strangely very few deer in the immediate area (I have spotted the area with a spotlight and never find any there),but the area within a couple miles boast many whitetail.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: First sighting was at night and very dark. The second was during the day a little cloudy with sunlight.

ENVIRONMENT: The area is a very old ravine heavily wooded with a creek at the bottom and steep sloops at the time with few houses and no winter maintenance.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Jim Osborne:

This makes three separate sightings in the same area (see Report #3584), occurring over a four year period - 84, 86, and 88.

Report # 3584 (Class A)
Submitted by witness on Thursday, January 03, 2002. Another encounter near Rt. 358 and Hell's Hollow Road, outside Greenville
YEAR: 1984

SEASON: Fall

STATE: Pennsylvania

COUNTY: Mercer County

LOCATION DETAILS: In the "Hell's Hollow" dip. Take left off of Rt. 358 on Hell's Hollow Road.

NEAREST TOWN: Greenville, PA

NEAREST ROAD: Route 358

OBSERVED: This story was recently told to me second hand in confidence by a very good friend of mine. He is an Eagle Scout and an honorable man. We are avid sportsmen and had spent alot of time together and with other sportsmen in the woods of Pennsylvania. I told him of my interest in the Florida Skunk Ape. I asked him if he or any of his family had ever heard or experienced any bigfoot encounters. He told me that it was ironic that I asked because I was present when his experience occurred. We were in Boyscouts at the time at a fall campout with our Troop, we were in the same Patrol. Our Troop was playing "Capture the Flag" around dusk. We were camping at a place called "Hell's Hollow" near the Greenville Sportsman Club out on Route 358. He and another Boyscout went out in the woods to hide. While they were hiding in some brush, they pushed a Bigfoot that rambled out of the brush and away from them at an alarming rate of speed. He said it definitely was bipedal and was huge. My friend stated that he was scared to death and that they made a promise not to tell anyone for fear of ridicule. He stated that he has never told anyone the story. I couldn't get any details as to the size or scent. He did state that he did not see its face. I told him of my intent to report the story and he said he would discuss it if contacted by the BFRO.

OTHER WITNESSES: One other Scout observed the creature. I have lost touch with him.

OTHER STORIES: Only those sightings I have read on your website. I saw the 11/18/01 sighting for Mercer County and had to report this second-hand sighting. I believe my friend, he would not lie about this.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: My friend stated that it was dusk and that they definitely saw something neither had seen before,a Sasquatch.

ENVIRONMENT: They went for the brush to hide. During our discussion, we thought the creature might have been attracted to our camp for food or just to observe us.

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Jim Osborne:

I talked with the primary witness on the phone and he related the following details.
His friend spotted the creature first and said "What's that?", at which point the witness looked to see a tall, bipedal creature walking away through the woods. The creature was about 75 yards away at the time. It was 7 to 8 feet tall, blackish-brown in color, hair long like an Irish setter (but equal in length over the body - not longer on the head), unhurried stride with arms hanging at its side - not swinging, and the arms were proportionately longer than a human's. Although it was tall it was not massive, and he estimated shoulder width to be about 2 1/2 feet. The creature was moving away during the entire observation and so neither of them got a look at the face. They quickly left the area.

The person who submitted this report has just found out that a relative who lives in the area has had two sightings in this same vicinity. A followup report on those sightings should be filed within a few weeks.

Report # 48013 (Class A)
Submitted by witness on Monday, February 16, 2015.
Memory told of a close daylight encounter behind a home outside Sandy Lake
(Show Printer-friendly Version)
YEAR: 1978 or 79

SEASON: Fall

MONTH: October

DATE: 10/15/1978

STATE: Pennsylvania

COUNTY: Mercer County

LOCATION DETAILS: From the red light in Sandy Lake take 173 north to Mill Street stay on Mill Street it turns into Coal Road go about 1 mile you will cross a small creek in a valley the incident happened near the back of the property.

NEAREST TOWN: Sandy Lake

NEAREST ROAD: Cole Road and Rt 62

OBSERVED: When I was 12 years old, my mother was cooking my breakfast before school and as she was cooking and looking out the window she said, what in the world is that? I jumped up just in time to see a large brown figure going into the woods toward a stream behind my house. She said it ran from the neighbors down a powerline and was snapping off sumac like they were twigs. Being young and curious I ran about 75 yds to the spot the animal had entered, there was a small drop off of about 20 feet then a level spot about 10 ft, then another 4 ft drop to the creek bed. When I arrived I observed the bigfoot at about 50 yrds, It must have heard me as it stopped and turned its upper torso and looked at me. The animal was between 6 and 7 ft tall with a dark face, after looking at me it made great strides down the creekbed and was gone around the bend. When my father arrived we went to check the area. There were very large heel prints in the top of the bank where the animal had landed when it leaped off of the top. I hunted those woods for years and there were times that I felt I was being watched, We heard vocalizations one night but my father said it was a bobcat, after hearing bigfoot recordings I believe they are what made the noise.

ALSO NOTICED: Heel prints

OTHER WITNESSES: My mother but she wasnt sure what it was just that it was on 2 feet

OTHER STORIES: Around the time of this incident there where many articles in the newspaper about a lady seeing a bigfoot in the hells kitchen area of Venango county, this creek leads to Sandy creek which leads to that area

TIME AND CONDITIONS: 7:45 am

ENVIRONMENT: At the time it was a large area of pine and oak trees

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Jarrett Johnson:

I spoke to the witness at length concerning his encounter from nearly 35+ years ago. Considering it was a life-changing event for him, he can still remember the encounter vividly. His clarity and detail of the Bigfoot creature attribute to a very interesting encounter.

The witness stated he was sitting at the kitchen table while his mother was cooking him breakfast. She witnessed a large, dark colored bipedal creature walking along the powerline on the edge of the woods. She gasped aloud "What in the world is that?"

His first thought was that it was a bear. Being a youngster at the time, he had never seen a bear and wanted to see for himself what his mother had alluded to through the kitchen window. The witness jumped up from the table and ran out the door towards the wood line where he got a fleeting glimpse of the creature as it entered the woods and dropped down towards the creek.

The witness stated that he had stepped into the woodline in a hurry and the creature must have heard him as it stopped and turned to look at him at a distance of approximately 50 yards. It actually made eye contact with him for about five seconds. When it turned to look at him, it moved the entire top of its body as it appeared to have no neck. He stated that he "got a really good look at the face". The creature then turned and quickly crossed the creek and disappeared through the sumac. It used its arms to "wade" through the sumac and appeared to be pushing the sumac away from its path. The boy was able to observe the creature from behind for approximately 30 seconds.

The witness and I engaged in a lengthy dialogue in relation to the physical description and attributes of the Bigfoot creature. During the course of our conversation, he communicated the following details:

- The color was a dark brown with a slight tinge of red
- The brown was darker in coloration than a white-tailed deer
- The length of the hair was similar to a sheep dog
- There was a dark line of color in the hair of the creature along the length of the spine.
- Very broad shoulders and chest with a "body builder" appearance
- Very muscular and round buttocks
- Did not notice any physical female characteristics and thought it was male in gender
- He saw the bottoms of its feet as it walked away from him. The soles were a lighter tan in color than the face

The witness described the head and face in great detail.

- Eyes were deep set above prominent cheek bones
- The creature had a significant jawline or mandible
- Eye color was deep black with no visible sclera
- It had a "coconut head" with a pointed appearance suggesting a sagittal crest
- Noticeable hair on the cheeks
- The skin of the face and cheeks was a dark tan and reminded him of "roofers" that he had seen that worked in the summer sun
- The nose was flat and wide with large human-like nostrils
- He did not see its teeth
- It looked very "annoyed" as it looked him in the eyes
- He viewed discernible hands and fingers which were long - The arms were also long as they hung to just above its knees.
- He saw the palms which were a dark tan like its face

Even though it has been many years since the encounter, the witness stated that it was such a monumental event in his life that he has maintained a vivid memory of the creature. The way that the creature moved was something that has always remained with him. The witness described its movement as such:

- It moved with grace and fluidity through the woods
- The creature moved with purpose and like it knew where it was going. He said he got the feeling that it was traveling somewhere
- It covered ground with great strides but was "light on its feet at the same time" for its great size.

The observer claimed that he did not want to go to school and was afraid to leave his mother at home. His mother urged him on to school.

His father was waiting for him when he got off the bus after school. The boy's mother had described the encounter to his father. His dad asked him to show him where the creature had walked through the woods. They found where the creature had crossed the creek as the bank had collapsed. His father pointed out the evidence of the heels of the creature in the damaged soil bank. There was a rocky ledge on the bend of the creek that enabled him to estimate the height at an estimated 6- 7' in height. If he were to approximate the size, the witness would say 600+ pounds due to its immense size. He and his father did not see any other visible tracks other than the damaged creek bank. Growing up on the property, they never observed anything unusual again.

The witness did state that two months later, a lady claimed to have seen and almost hit a Sasquatch with her vehicle on Route 965 near Hell's Kitchen. He stated that he remembered an article in the Franklin, PA newspaper - The Derrick. I could not find any reference to this article online. The area has since changed over the past 35+ years.

In speaking to the witness, I found him to be honest, forthright, and sincere.

About BFRO Investigator Jarrett Johnson:

Jarrett grew up in an area of western Pennsylvania that has historically experienced reported sightings regarding a hominid creature in the Hell's Hollow area. Having heard the stories as a child, he never gave the local lore serious thought... until years later when a family member revealed a personal encounter. He also spent a number years on the edge of the Florida Everglades where sasquatch activity has been reported for many years. In 1998, a Skunk Ape photo taken near Ochopee was posted along with a feature article in the Sun-Sentinel newspaper and his serious interest in the subject of sasquatch began.

JJ is an enthusiast of the outdoors including remote camping, hunting, fly fishing for native trout, seeking wild morel mushrooms, riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, and all things related to the sasquatch phenomena.

Jarrett has attended BFRO expeditions in Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia. He has also attended a number of private expeditions.
