Los Angeles County, Angeles National Forest
Chilao Campground Sighting 1995

My sighting happened in 1995, but at the time I thought I had seen a bear. I've known about "Bigfoot" since the early seventies, but always thought its range was in Northern California and not south of Yosemite or about there. I've done alot of hiking in the Angeles forest in the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains and have always enjoyed checking for signs of wildlife (tracks, scat, hair , etc....) to see what type of animals had been in the area. Not once did I even think to look for "Bigfoot" sign. I've been a believer in "Bigfoot" since I was a kid and dreamed of going into remote places to find the elusive animal, but a lifestyle in Los Angeles did not permit it (probably a bad excuse). I never made the time to go up north and do any research myself but I have read a lot of literature. The first story I read about the "Bigfoot" phenomena was about the Albert Ostman incident, which was in a small paperback book called mysterious monsters or something like that. Anyway, if I hadn't stumbled onto your site on the Internet, I would still be in the dark about the Southern California "Bigfoot".

Place: Off the N2, Angeles Crest Highway, 20 miles north of La Canada, in the Angeles forest at the Chilao picnic area about 2 miles north of the Chilao Campground area.

Time: 12:30-1:30 AM. August 1995.

Terrain: The picnic area is a small canyon about 1/2 mile long by 1/4 mile wide. The north and south side rise out of the canyon to hills and have trails that lead and there a lot of pine trees along the perimeter. The middle area has picnic tables and is flat with a seasonal creek running almost down the middle of it. Pine trees are abundant but not as heavy as the outskirts of the canyon. On the north side there is a road that runs thru the area from off N2, it passes a visitors center on the north and continues thru to the Chilao Campground area south.

The creek area has a lot of brambles along the edge of it and is at its widest, 8 ft. by 1 ft. deep when running. I've been here during all times of the year and there are never a lot of people around. It's just a nice little place to have a couple of beers and get away from the L.A, "rat race". There is also a fire pit in the southwest corner for people to use or ranger presentations I would think, though I've never seen anyone using it other then myself.

What Happened: A friend and myself were there after closing just sitting by the fire playing backgammon, having a couple of beers. She needed to relieve herself so I walked her to the restroom that was about 200 yards away. We did not have any flashlights with us and was very dark. I waited outside for her just looking into the night that was very calm and peaceful.

We started to walk back and about half way out of the right corner of my eye, I saw something big and hairy. I first reaction was to grab her and run to the car which was parked about 30 yards away. We stayed in car for about 10 minutes to see if the bear was still around and wait for it to leave the area.

We came out and talked about what had happened. She didn't see or hear anything which I could understand, being so dark and all. I started thinking to myself and didn't add up to me. First, the bear seemed to walking on its hind legs and very quick and agile. Plus there was no sound at all, no grunts or mouth chomping, nothing. Plus it was tall, about 7-8 ft. Not even remotely thinking it could be a "Bigfoot" I filed it away in my head thinking that was really odd.

Until I came across your website and it all made sense. I did not see a lot of detail and I wasn't looking for any at time so sorry there is not more detail about the thing but I believe it was a "Bigfoot". I know how bears act and have seen them in my hikes. One other thing, now the animal was to my right and behind me a little, about 25 ft. Something actually made me turn around and look, like a sense of being watched or something, I can't explain it. I hope this helps you with your demographics of the creatures you are monitoring. Now, when I go hiking with my kids I keep my eyes open a little more. One last thing, I did not smell anything before or after the incident.

Thanks,
Bob Matrinez

Angeles National Forest
May 12, 2003

I have always hoped that animals such as a Sasquatch, Yeti, and the Loch Ness Monster exist. As a child, I always dreamed that I would see one, especially Nessie. However, as I grew to adulthood, I began to scoff more and more at sightings, never quite disbelieving, but quietly thinking that most who spot unknown animals are hardly close to credible.

I can think that no longer, as I too have become one of the growing list of people that have seen a "bigfoot."

I had set out for a solo hike in the Angeles National Forest. I arrived a little later than I would have liked around 9:00 AM and I wasn't sure exactly where the trailhead for Mount Waterman started. I was driving around, when I decided to check if Buckhorn Campground was deserted. There was one car parked in the back, and it looked as if the people who had came in the car were off hiking, so I made a note to myself that at this time of year during the week, the campsite is pretty much empty. I like them this way.

As I turned my car around and was heading out of the campground, I saw something out of the corner of my eye. I turned to look for only a portion of a second, and I clearly spotted a dark humanoid figure less than 30 yards away from me. I stopped my truck, and turned to look, and all I could see was the gentle moving of the bush in the area the creature was standing in.

My encounter lasted only for a second. I didn't get out to look for it, nor explore where it had been standing. My only thought was to leave it alone, so that it would also leave me alone. I didn't think I would ever tell anyone about this, but the more I think back and reflect upon it, I know that I have to.

As I began my hike, I hoped that my visitor would return and let me catch another glimpse, but that was not to be.

Lake Hughes, California
Near Palmdale

In 1985, while driving through Lake Hughes, California at 1:00A.M. as I was coming over the top of a hill I saw in the distance (at the right side of the road) what appeared to be a huge wolf. As I came over the hill (the time span of this event was only a few seconds) it started across the road in front of me.

Just as it got into my lane, the headlights of my '72 Ford van shined on it and it froze and looked straight at me! This is when I saw that it had a flat face! Like a human's face, not a wolf.

I also saw that it was on its hands and knees, and its back was even with the bottom of the vans windshield! Its eyes were like a human, except the white part was very yellow and bloodshot. The other thing was that its nose looked like a human nose, but it was mostly (not completely) covered with hair. The rest of its body was covered with thick matted dark colored hair. I swerved around it, it did not move. I then asked my wife (she was with me) if we should turn around, but we did not.

The next morning on the way back past that spot, I saw a bunch of photographers taking pictures of the ground across from where I almost hit it. I chickened out and did not stop and have regretted it ever since. I know that what I saw was a Bigfoot! It has been almost 15 years and I can still see its face. Lake Hughes, CA., is located west of Palmdale, CA. It is accessible by driving west from Palmdale on avenue P. Also by driving south on 60th Street West.

By driving south on 110th Street West, and by going south off highway (138) off of Interstate 5. These streets can all be found in the extreme West End of the Antelope Valley. The road is called Lake Hughes Road. You can also get there by going north on Boquet Canyon Road from the Valencia, Newhall area. Write back if you need more specifics, I will try to find one of my old maps of the area.

Quartz Hill, Los Angeles County, California 1979

A woman that works for me states that her husband in 1979 spotted a Bigfoot type being in Quartz Hill, California (approximately 1 mile west Lancaster, California). Being born in Lancaster I have heard often of the stories of sightings. I was an unbeliever until 1982 when I had my own encounter in the Kennedy Meadows area of the Golden Trout Wilderness Area. I thought that the Quartz Hill sighting should be added to your list. This woman and her husband are very creditable. The being approached her property and looked over her fence surrounding her backyard. The alert of their dogs yielded the need to investigate. When her husband walked out and approached the area, he spotted the being. The being ran one way and the husband ran back in his house. Thanks for reading. You may also want to look into the Tehachapi Mountain Park area also. I have been searching there for 14 years. Some leads, enough to keep making go back every 2-3 weeks.

Sycamore Flats Campground, San Gabriel Mountains
Southern California January 21, 1976

Alone at the Sycamore Flats Campground shortly after midnight, full moor and dog acting nervous, Willie Roemermann saw an eight-foot creature take two steps and freeze by the bush. Roemermann shone his flashlight on itm, tried to take pictures but not enough light. Next day he found 16.5 inch, five toed footprints, and cast them. John Green, BC Archives.

Also see 1971 report and photo by Peter Guttilla of Willie Roemermann at Sycamore Flats Campground, San Gabriel Mountains five years earlier.

Pasadena California
San Gabriel Mountains

The location of the sighting was in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, approximately 15 miles from downtown Los Angeles, near the city of Pasadena and Altadena. The young woman was a junior in high school at the time and she was with a group of friends, hanging out in the foothills, hiking around the paths and such. It may have been daylight when they arrived, but at the time of the sighting it was evening, but she states there was a moon, so things were better lighted than usual.

They were on an old abandoned estate, which they had heard was once owned and lived in by either Groucho Marx, or one of his brothers. I have heard about this piece of property myself; there was an article a couple years ago in a local magazine, describing where it is located. All I remember was that it was in the foothills near the general area of the city of Pasadena.

Anyway...this piece of property is overgrown with vines and such. Behind the main house are a couple, or a few, cottages, which looked to be guest houses, also abandoned and overgrown. Also, this piece of property may belong to the county of Los Angeles or the state of California, because she noted there were signs by certain trees and bushes, identifying the types of plants.

As they were walking up the driveway and were in the area of the cottages, they suddenly noticed a white wolf (rare, I believe, to this area, especially white) or a coyote (common to the area, but white I have never heard of) standing at a fairly close distance. They were afraid of it. It did not try to attack or make any noise, but nonetheless they were afraid of it and decided to slowly walk back down the path, as to not provoke it to run after them. At some point shortly thereafter, they stopped. Why, I am not sure, but they were still near the cottages only moments after first spotting the white "wolf", when suddenly they noticed a large, hairy creature, standing still, upright on two legs, approximately 20 yards away from them. In the moonlight it was silhouetted against the mountainside, just behind it. It was standing above the foundation of this old home, near the cottages.

She stated it was tall, exactly how tall she could not say, but she stated it was easily well over six feet. She also stated that it definitely had no clothes on. They couldn't see the facial features at all, because of the darkness, but the moon definitely lighted the being up enough to see its silhouette. They, of course, were very frightened and immediately turned to leave the area and head back to safety. I also asked her if she could hear it breathing, or smell anything, but she said "no" to both questions. As they were hurrying away from it, it walked with them out of the area, but keeping its distance. I am not sure if any of them tried looking at it again as they were being "escorted" out, but I feel certain they did not, since she did not mention it, and they were too frightened, but they were definitely aware that it was walking with them, keeping its distance. Once they got to a turn in the path, they ran like crazy and didn't see it again.

When they got to school the next week they told some other friends about this experience, and some of the senior boys stated they wanted to go back up there the next weekend and try to find whatever it was. At least a couple of them brought some kind of gun (B-B or 22 rifle perhaps, she's not sure) for protection.

The following weekend a group of them went up there again, herself included. I do not know whether it was day or night. When they were going up the path they heard what she described as heavy "footfalls." They continued to the place where there was the old foundation they had seen before, and they heard more of these heavy footfalls. They did not see the creature, but they definitely kept hearing these heavy, heavy steps. She emphatically stated that it was NOT stomping--it was just the normal sounds of a very heavy foot walking around on the foundation. The "boys" got their guns readied and went after it, even though they did not actually see it, and they could hear it running and it ran into the bushes and trees where they could hear it crushing through the vegetation. The boys went in after it and tried to find it, but did not find anything. No one noted any foul odor this time either and there was no noise from this creature except for the heavy footsteps. I don't know if they noticed any footprints.

Santa Monica Mountains, Southern California 1989

Some time in late March or early April of 1989 a friend and I were working on a foot bridge crossing over Medea Creek in the Santa Monica Mountains, in Southern California.

We had left the work to get some more logs. As we returned to the site we saw a figure standing between us an the foot bridge we had been working on not Ten minutes before. We then realized that our truck was beyond the bridge on the otherside. This animal stood between Eight to Nine feet tall and was about Four to Five feet wide.

No sound was made by the creature, no scent on the wind coming from our back, But we both knew we were not welcome there at that time and place. The feeling was that of malice, anger and intimidation. We both decided to take another way back to the truck being that we are some what intelligent people.

To this day when I tell people about my run - in with the Big Guy (Lil Jon) it still sends CHILLS all over my body. Sometimes when I'm alone somewhere I still look around to see if its there. One thing that bothers me is ,How long was it watching before it decided to take a look at what we were doing ? I know that if I were placed in a similar setting as the one that evening I feel that I would sit down and talk to it in a calm and friendly voice and hope I don't offend it!
