Is There A ‘Big Hairy Monster’ On your Menu?
With he Plumstead Lions Club cancelling its roast beef supper this month and the Perkasie Lions Club substitution port chops at its annual streak fry in August. I have a theory about what happened to Bigfoot. Bigfoot seems to be a cousin to a “big, hairy monster” allegedly sighted on several occasions in Hilltown Township and later in the Pottstown are some months ago. As the “big, hairy monster” has not been reported afield in a long time, maybe it met the same fate as Bigfoot, which last week was the talk of the town in Greensburg out in the southwestern part of the state. No exact sizing of the “big, hairy monster” was ever made, although people obviously though it was big. But Bigfoot has to stand at least eight feet tall because a fellow in Greensburg said he climbed out of his shower one night and glanced out the window to see Bigfoot’s shiny, reddish eyes peering in the window. The window is eight feet off of the ground. Can you imagine that much meat on the hoof? As I said, the reason no one has been able to trap Bigfoot is clear: since his last sighting, he has inhabited someone’s meat freezer and will come out only on occasions rear – or perhaps medium – in the form of steaks, roasts and sausage. Of course, that will never be proven. Who would admit they are having Bigfoot – or, for that matter a “big, hairy monster” – free dinner? On the other hand, one can not prove it didn’t happen. The world needs more Bigfoots, and unicorns and Loch Ness monsters as well. Anything to add to the meat supply. As if responding to some universal urge, people have been trying to populate the earth with fabulous creatures since time began. Only now do I realize it is because they are hungry. That is how a moment of crisis – such as the present cost of meat – can suddenly illuminate history for one, assuming he is mentally prepared. Mental preparedness is the special province of the mystics of the Orient, and it is fraught with irony that the unraveling of the ageless urge to create wonderful creatures fell to my lot. Doubtless the easterners would have made the discovery long before I did, except that they are vegetarians. While Americans continue to swallow the myth – and possibly the substance – of the like of Bigfoot, there have never been reports in the East of “big, hairy grains of rice” or Big Leaf threatening anybody. I remain humble.
