Man recalls a sasquatch watching he and a group of teenagers taking a walk while camping near Houghton Lake
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

YEAR: 1984

SEASON: Fall

MONTH: October

DATE: 3rd weekend

STATE: Michigan

COUNTY: Roscommon County

LOCATION DETAILS: My family would camp at the intersection one quarter section East of 18 and one quarter section North of Pond Rd. The sighting occurred on a dirt road, one quarter section North of our camp.

NEAREST TOWN: Meredith

NEAREST ROAD: Near Hwy. 18 and Pond Rd.

OBSERVED: While attending a family hunting trip, several of us were walking on a two track north of our camp. We were almost a quarter mile from camp, climbing a steep portion of the road.

Suddenly, the four of us stopped dead in our tracks. At the top of the two track, a large, dark figure stood in the middle of the road staring at us.

The thing was quite tall, and very broad across the chest. The arms were longer than a man, and it seemed frozen as it looked at us. I could not make out any features, but am certain that it was not a person. It looked more like one of the drawings or statues I have seen on the net or in books.

After what seemed like forever (it was probably only a minute or so) we turned and ran back to camp. I am not sure what the thing at the top of the hill did, but we didn't stick around.

Several years later, a few of us discussed this sighting, and those who aren't necessarily believers in Bigfoot had no explaination as to what we saw.

We

ALSO NOTICED: Large pushed in footprints in the general area of the sighting. The depressions were in soft gravel/sand and were not well defined.

OTHER WITNESSES: There were four of us all 13 or 14 years old.

OTHER STORIES: I hunted and camped at this location from 1984 until the early 2000s. I have three other incidents that could be worth noting.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: It was early afternoon on an overcast, cool fall day.

ENVIRONMENT: Up until the late 90's, the area was hardwoods with some wet areas. There were also pines mixed in the area. The area has since been clear cut, and is nothing like it used to be. This area is located a quarter mile from the Mid Forest Lodge preserve, which is a large, private hunting/camping area.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Don Peer:

I spoke at length with the witness by telephone. He stated that he and the witnesses were around 13 or 14 at the time. He states he has since talked with the other witness since then and they all remember the same details. None of the witnesses have any other explanation of what they saw. The witness is now 38 years old.

They were camped with several family members and decided to take a walk, exploring a two track that ran north from their camp. They came to a part of the two track that ran up a steep hill and when they looked up to the top of the hill, they saw the figure standing at the top, in the middle of the trail. He described it as massive, with very broad shoulders, Dark brown hair that was a uniform color and long arms that hung down, almost to the knees. He estimates the height at between 7 and 8 feet tall and the weight around 500 pounds.

He stated that they watched it for about 2 minutes and then got scared and turned and ran back to their camp, which was about a quarter mile away. They did not look back to see what the animal did, but didn't feel it followed them. This is the only sighting the witness had there, although he returned several times to hunt there over the years. Upon further trips to hunt the area over the years, the witness stated that a few times he heard strange screams at night that he could not identify as belonging to any animal he knew of. The area has since been logged and a large forest fire burned several hundred acres just to the north of the location. I am very familair with the location, as it is not far from my house and I grew up riding dirt bikes in the area.

This is a heavily forested area surrounding the clear cut areas and the clear cut areas have a good regrowth. The area has a large population of deer and other wildlife.

Daylight sighting in woods behind high school outside Houghton Lake
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

YEAR: 1999

SEASON: Spring

MONTH: April

DATE: mid April

STATE: Michigan

COUNTY: Roscommon County

LOCATION DETAILS: South end of the lake, in the woods next to the high school off of M-55.

NEAREST TOWN: Houghton Lake

NEAREST ROAD: Townline Road

OBSERVED: At the time of the incident I was 15 years old and had spent my entire life in the woods. I knew what was out there and how to identify it. It was about 3:00pm and I was walking home from school through the woods. As I was walking I had an uneasy feeling and started to look around at my surroundings. I eventually dismissed my feeling and chalked it up to my mind playing tricks on me. I continued on my walk, with my head down, not thinking anything more about my uneasy feeling. I happened to glance up and notice "someone" standing in the trail ahead of me (about 70 - 80 yards.) I originally dismissed the person due to the fact it was common practice for some people to get out of school and smoke cigarettes or dope in that area. I concluded that what I saw was a person partaking in one of those practices.

Something was nagging at me that the person I saw didn't seem right...the spot where the individual was standing was where the swamp meets the trail. No body went that far in to smoke. As I looked up, I froze. I had an unexplainable fear come over me. I have seen deer, bear, bobcat, and cougars in this peticular piece of land and have never been scared. What I saw before me was none of those. The creature in front of me was all one uniform color, either dark brown or black. It's arms extended down almost to it's knees, and it's shoulders were very wide. In addition, it was standing on two legs and kinda peering at me from around a tree (it would later move into the trail.)

Even though I could not move or yell, my mind was still working. I did what I could to burn an image of this creature in my mind. I remember thinking that the head looked too small for the body, and that I could not see any skin tone on the face. It was as if the skin was the same color as the rest of the body. The last thing I did was notice a branch above the creatures head. I noted that the branch was only a couple of inches above the creatures head.

I looked at this animal for a minute or less when it pivoted on it's back foot, took one stride into the swamp, and then disappeared. After ten minutes the paralyzed feeling left me and I returned to normal. At that point I decided to investigate. I walked up to the spot where it had stood and looked for any indication of something being there. The ground at this spot was very hard; no tracks were visible. The stride of this creature was at least five feet. As I mentioned earlier, the creature was originally peering at me from behind a tree, but came out into the trail. I estimated from where the creature stood to where I last saw it on the edge of the trail/swamp was about five feet. It only took one step and it was out of sight. Now, I am about six foot tall and have a three foot stride...what ever I saw would have to be considerably larger than me. With this in mind, I also looked for the tree branch that the beast was standing under. I found it right above my head, indicating I was indeed at the right location. The branch was about nine feet high. Whatever I saw was just shy of nine feet tall.

To this day I have no difinitive proof of what I saw to be a Bigfoot. However, I don't know what else to call it. The specific location, on the edge of the swamp, was not frequented by people, the creature's body structure was not that of a human, and lastly the creature was much too large to be a human. As of this writing I have not had any other incidents in that location, though I have had a strange encounter in another part of Northern Michigan. I don't feel that the creature would have harmed me, but I very rarely go into that area of the woods by myself.

ALSO NOTICED: Nothing unusual happened after that incident...though I have had another experience in another county.

OTHER WITNESSES: I was by myself. When I investigated I did not hear anything in the vacinity. If it was a person I would have been able to hear them moving away in the woods.

OTHER STORIES: The only other incident I have heard of was the story I read on your website.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: This incident occurred about 3:00 pm on a sunny day. My visibility was clear.

ENVIRONMENT: The area of woods is about 1 square mile that contains swamp, conifers, and hard woods. There are also some hills, valleys, and thick sappling thickets. I wouldn't think a creature of that stature would reside there...maybe it was passing through, but I know bears reside there and I have not seen one in a long time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Fred Greca Jr.:

I spoke with the witness at length on the phone. There is not much more to add to what the witness has already written, as he has done a thorough job in describing his encounter. When I commented on how detailed his report was written he mentioned he has had training in law enforcement, so he was well versed in reporting the details. He described himself as being an avid outdoorsman and hunter and deer hunts in the general area.

Even though it has been 7 years since the sighting, I arranged to meet the witness at the sighting location. On 9/30/06, the witness and I walked down the trail to where the sighting occurred. The woods were dense and would be easy for anything to escape notice in it. It was raining the entire two hours we were out hiking through the woods. We hiked in a large loop, taking the easy walking advantage of the existing old logging trails and game trails. We came upon two water sources; one was a swamp type area and the other a small pool, possibly a natural spring. While trekking down a well traveled game trail we came upon an unnaturally placed stick structure, which blocked the trail. We both determined it was unlikely that it had fallen naturally there. Leaving it undisturbed we continued further down the game trail another 30 yards and came across another stick structure of the same shape, again blocking the trail. The sticks used for construction this time were straight and larger and definitely did not fall into place. Another 20 feet beyond that was yet another stick structure of the same shape, again blocking the trail. As we looked around the woods from that area we found two more stick structures on each side of the game trail about twenty feet into the woods. The trail was in a half horseshoe shape, and was at the rim of small ravine. We left the stick structures undisturbed and then continued on back to our vehicles, with no other unusual observances.

Two firefighters have near collision with animal north of Houghton Lake.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

YEAR: 1980

SEASON: Summer

MONTH: August

DATE: 12

STATE: Michigan

COUNTY: Roscommon County

LOCATION DETAILS: Swamp between 2 hills

NEAREST TOWN: Roscommon

NEAREST ROAD: County Rd 104.

OBSERVED: A friend and myself were coming home from a party, about 10:30 at night. We were in his Chevy van. Something ran out in front of us. He slammed on his brakes and this large animal on 2 legs bent at the waist looked right at us, 3 to 4ft. away. I was close enough to see the pupil and its eyes were bloodshot. Small head not a bear. Long brown matted hair with a blond tint here and there. As it went by watching us, I felt it was scared. I continued to watch and it was bent at the waist and it hip was level with my vision in van. This all happened very quick, 4 to 5 steps and it cleared the road.

Another car was comming at us and went into the ditch. We drove on about 2 min. and I said to my friend, Did you see something back there and he stoped the van and said I didn't want to say anything, I asked him tell me what you seen and I was not crazy either. We have both told the story here and there but have never told you or police, No one would believe us. You do not have to believe us either but it is the truth.

OTHER WITNESSES: 2 of us, he was driving and I was a passenger, so I ended up with my face close to the wind shield when he locked up the breakes.

OTHER STORIES: Nothing:I never went back. I wouldn't want to run into this in the woods. Outcome would have only one end

TIME AND CONDITIONS: 10:30 at night Lighting was good our van and on comming car.

ENVIRONMENT: Thick swamp on both sides of road.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Stan Courtney:

I spoke with the witness by phone.

The witness stated that the animal was between seven and eight feet tall as it walked away. He was very impressed by the size when it was directly in front of their vehicle.

He stated that the face was human looking and he could see the whites of the eyes. As they looked into each others eyes he felt that the animal was as frightened as he was.

Family driving a rural two-track have a late day encounter north of Higgins Lake
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Show Printer-friendly Version)
YEAR: 2017

SEASON: Spring

MONTH: April

DATE: 3rd

STATE: Michigan

COUNTY: Roscommon County

LOCATION DETAILS: Specific directions omitted upon the family's request.

NEAREST TOWN: Higgins Lake

OBSERVED: We live in Michigan near a national forest. One evening my 2 18 year old daughters and I took my pick up down a two track looking for rocks for our fire pit we were building. It was light out with a light rain. We were coming up over a ridge on the trail and when we were starting down a huge bigfoot ran across the trail in front of us. We all saw it well. It was covered in long black hair with a patch of white hair along its back near its shoulder. Its was running with amazing speed in a forward leaning position and its arms seemed to almost touch the ground as it ran we figured it to be approximately 9 foot tall. We could clearly see legs arms hands head muscle definition throughout its body even with long hair. The hair on its back and body was longer than the hair on its head and arms. We didnt get to see its face tho.but the strangest part of this was that it was running with a gray colored wolf that I've seen multiple times before. It really appeared that they were together..The wolf was at full stride about 15 feet behind it .Once it cleared the track it went up the hill on the other side with an amazing speed. It seemed to pull away from the wolf at the last little bit we watched it. We tried to drive to where they last were to try and see them again but they were gone. That wolf was ran very close to me on my 4 wheeler and I can tell you he is no little puppy. He leaves an almost 5 1/2 inch track and the bigfoot dwarfed the wolf. The next day I went back to look for prints but the 14 hours of heavy rain over night ruined and prints there might have been. We have found several other 4 toed very large prints in the area. A local bf researcher came out to investigate the area and was impressed with what is called tree structures. There was are a couple found like a teepee style and one is very large but the trees are upside down. Weird! I have pictures of the things we have found and are happy to share all my evidence we have found to help others know these things are real and they exist here in Michigan.

ALSO NOTICED: The speed at which it was able to move was just amazing and the wolf running with it like a pet was very strange. We have heard loud roaring sounds in those woods many times with many different people over the last few months since deer season. And I've found prints in the snow that I've recorded with 4 toes. Two different size 4 toed prints were found crossing a sandy trail in the morning. I took pics of those also.

OTHER WITNESSES: Yes my 18 year old twin daughters. We were riding in the pickup looking straight ahead down the trail when it crossed We all saw it very well .

OTHER STORIES: 2 men live out in that forest in a house with no electricity. They both have claimed to see a bigfoot .one was very close to our incident. And one of the men says hes heard the roaring call like sound from time to time and a tarzan / monky sound behind his house from time to time. He literally lives around almost no one the majority of the year.

TIME AND CONDITIONS: Evening about 745pm iit was light out with a slight rain.

ENVIRONMENT: This is a forest area state owned.where there are swampy areas with dense pine all around.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Follow-up investigation report by BFRO Investigator Richard Knox:

The witness has had several encounters, I will document each encounter in separate statements, in an attempt to avoid confusion.

First Encounter:

The first area is northwest of Higgins Lake in Roscommon county, there are few actual roads within this area, most "roads" are two-tracks used by those vacationing in the area for fun or by hunters during a seasonal hunting period, those off road trails form a checkerboard pattern throughout this area. This checkerboard consists of open farmland, blocks of woods, patches of scrub brush dotting the area and the occasional open area that has a pumpjack. There are small creeks, a few 1 acre lakes, some patches of swamp and a few seasonal wetlands. Though US-127 is nearby, once you get a few hundred yards into the area, the only indications of civilization is the two-track trails that outline the checkboard and the occasional pumpjack. Glaciers shaped the area. A large portion of the area is the so-called Grayling outwash plain, which consists of broad outwash plain including sandy ice-disintegration ridges; jack pine barrens, some white pine-red pine forest, and northern hardwood forest. Large lakes were created by glacial action.

There are a varied assortment of wildlife; ex: (geese, ducks, deer, squirrels, raccoons, etc.), along with farm crops ex:(soybean, corn, fruit, etc.)

The area the witness had one of his encounters is wooded with ash, birch and pines; while the terrain is mostly rolling hills, with wetlands and the occasional kettle dotting the landscape, on one of the two-tracks previously noted that form the checkboard pattern. There are no major power corridors located nearby, but north of the encounter is what appears to be the outlines of a former creek/stream/river.

The witness explained to me that he was in his pickup with his daughters looking for stones for a fire ring they were working on. They were heading east on the two-track when they crested a hill in front of them, when something ran in front of their vehicle heading south. The witness stated it was covered in hair that appeared black in color, with what appears to be a white or lighter color patch between its shoulder blades. The creature could have possibly been on all fours, because the witness noticed that it was leaning forward and that its arms almost reached the ground, but it was coming up an incline, crossed the road and up another incline, so the arms may have been stretched out to grab a hold of anything in front of its travel path (trees, earth, stumps, etc.)

The witness also noted that directly behind the creature was a large wolf that appeared to be keeping pace with the creature and that he felt the wolf wasn't chasing the creature, but was running with it. The witness stated that he has seen a wolf in that area of the woods on more than one occasions= and that the one behind the creature looked very much the same as the previous one which had left a paw print around 5-1/2".

The witness estimated that if the creature stood up, it would be around 9' tall, he also noted that the hair on the back and body appeared longer than the hair on its head and arms.

My initial contact with the witness was at his residence, he invited us in and we began discussing the area, his experience and approximately where it was located. He and one of his daughters hopped in his truck and we followed him to the area of the first experience. It took some time to get there, the two-tracks are not easily traversed by mere cars, 4-wheel drive was required that day. Along the way, we took numerous photos of interesting tree structures. The first spot he took us to was a location that he and the family routinely camp at, a 20' x 40' indent into the brush off one of the two-tracks. He showed us a fairly large stick structure nearby, which appeared to be at least 15' tall, there is also a smaller (mini-me) versions right next to it, and we also noticed that there are a lot of arches in the surrounding woods. Now they could be from snow load, or not; I am just noting that there are dozens and dozens of them around in the woods. We also found a ORV trail that had branches, limbs and a tree leaning over it blocking access down it, not saying its anything but interesting. We also encountered something that the witness drove past, but I found very interesting, so I stopped to look at it and take some pictures.

What I found was part of a tree suspended horizontal, up a ways in a tree, held up by these branches. Now, I know what some may say, "Ok, so what..", but if you notice the tree is bigger than the branches holding it, so if it fell the weight & size should have broken those limbs, also if you look at the last picture, you see that it was cut by a chain saw.

Now, my question is simple, "What type of individual would cut a tree down, only to hoist it back up into the air, setting it on a few tree limbs?"

2nd Encounter:

The second area is on the western side of "Dead Stream Swamp", which was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1976 and is part of the Au Sable State Forest. The 11,680 acre parcel according to Michigan DNR; "…is an exceptionally large example (one of the largest in the United States) of a northern white cedar swamp, considered to be the climax in bog forest development. Large white cedar swamps are disappearing, partially due to the demand for this timber product. Besides swamp forest, the Landmark contains approximately 800 acres of deciduous upland forest; shrubs and sedges bordering the lower reaches of Dead Stream; and the 60-acre Bear Lake, a bog pond bordered by an expansive sphagnum-heath mat."

There are a varied assortment of wildlife; ex: (geese, ducks, deer, squirrels, raccoons, etc.), along with farm crops ex:(soybean, corn, fruit, etc.)

The other encounter occurred on the boarder of a swamp, with trees to the north and west and scrub/ bushes lining the two-track that lead to the clearing. There are several trails to the north & northeast of the clearing that go off into the woods or into the swamp.

The witnesses second encounter occurred south of Higgins Lake, near an area that is called "Dead Stream Swamp". There was a two-track that went from the main road back towards and skirting the western edge of the swamp ending at a clearing that opened up to around a 150' in diameter. The witness stated that it was him, family and friends that were gathering for a party. There was a fire going and everyone was laughing, sitting around in chairs or at the picnic table that the witness brought. As the evening progressed, they started noticing sounds coming from the woods surrounding the clearing, breaking branches, vocalizations and what sounded like a tree crashing to the ground. They eventually saw a silhouette moving in the woods, west of the clearing and that prompted everyone to decide to leave. The witness, friends and family proceeded down the two-track towards the main road and came across a tree laying across their path. Several of the party-goers grabbed chainsaws, cut the tree up to move it, allowing everyone to eventually leave. The picnic table is still in the clearing, the witness currently has no intentions on retrieving it.

The second experience was brought up by the witness at the tail end of the discussion we were having about his first encounter, afterwards he offered to take us to the spot, but wanted us to understand that when it starts getting dark, he wanted out of that area. Upon arrival, I noticed that the turn off he took was an easy one to miss if you're driving down the road & were not familiar with the area, but once on the two-track after about 10-20 feet, you lose sight of the road of the main road. The dirt path wound back and forth for several hundred yards, before coming out into the clearing with the swamp to the right, woods to the front & left. Upon exiting the vehicles, we walked around the clearing as the witness proceeded to explain the circumstances of the night. He pointed the directions out of the vocalizations, he showed us where they saw the silhouette of the creature walking in the woods (it was late day, and with the sun behind the trees, everything looked like a silhouette in that direction.) We walked into the woods on the northside of the clearing and found numerous trails leading northwards, to the east and also to the west. After searching the area, we (the witness and I) decided to follow one of the trails to the east where we encountered the swamp, with the trail continuing into it.

The stick structure is compelling along with its mini-me version, the many, many arches that can be seen throughout the woods makes you stop and wonder whether that many can be attributed to natural causes and then finding a tree cut near its base and suspended some 15' above ground by limbs that are smaller in diameter than the tree itself. As for the witness and his daughter, I found them to be credible in their statements. I do believe that they had an encounter with something that they believe was a sasquatch being followed by a wolf.

There are 14 reports within a 30 mile radius of this report.

This witness recently shared his encounters in person at the August 2018 UPBSRO Townhall Meeting.
